Rasterization: What are we talking about?
Converting a PDF to Image (JPG or PNG) involves a process called "Rasterization". The PDFOhlala rendering engine reads the PDF's vector code and "draws" each page as a grid of pixels with a precise resolution (e.g., 200 DPI for high-quality rendering).
When should you convert a PDF to an image?
- Social Networks: It is impossible to post a PDF directly on Instagram or Facebook. Converting to JPG is the only solution to share your CV, an infographic or an advertising poster.
- Creating thumbnails: Generating a cover image for the first page of a report to display on your website.
- Display security: By transforming text into a PNG image, you prevent bots or users from easily copying and pasting your textual content.
JPG or PNG? Which one to choose?
PDFOhlala gives you the choice. Prefer JPG for pages containing many complex photos (the file will be lighter). Opt for PNG if your PDF mainly contains text, graphic diagrams or if you want to keep absolute sharpness (lossless compression).
